Scott Fellman
Aquascaping for The Aesthetically Challenged
My name is Scott Fellman, and I’m a hard-core, fully obsessed marine aquarium hobbyist! Of all the disciplines within our hobby, the one that really seems to elude me is aquascaping.

Over the years, I’ve assembled some truly-well-awful aquascapes! Not all that long ago, in complete frustration, I took a deep breath and started over yet again, determined to create aquascapes that look more like nature and less like a jumble of rocks.

After some time, I’d like to report to you that I’m really an expert at designing and assembling unique aquascapes. I’d like to tell you that, but I can’t! You see, I’m aesthetically challenged. Aquascaping is my kryptonite, as they say!

So, to overcome my aquascaping issues, I went on a personal quest to study and practice the art of aquascaping like never before. No more walls of rock with corals sticking up like chicken drumsticks for me! Along the way, I’ve met some cool people, seen some amazing aquariums, and have learned a few pointers on creating memorable aquascapes.

For those of you who are talented, successful aquascapers, this will be a refresher on some interesting concepts.

For those of you who, like me, find this process challenging, I hope that I can inspire you to try some new stuff! In this presentation, we’ll look at some of the basics of aquascaping designs, with considerable attention paid to rockwork and mimicry of natural structures.

We will see some amazing marine aquariums from around the world, and examine some ideas that can help you create truly unique aquariums of your own! This is not just aquascaping. This is aquascaping for the aesthetically challenged!

Aquarium Lighting Technology, MH vs. LED

At the meeting, Pat Ormiston, founder of PFO Lighting, inc., will be demonstrating PFO's new "Galilieo" LED light hood that is slicker, lower-profile, and lower in cost than it's Solaris cousin!

The Galileo hood will be available in 9", 24",30" and 48" lengths.

The lecture will also cover the most significant differences in Metal Halide and LED technologies.

In addition, they will also be donating a Metal Halide retro kit for the raffle for some lucky winner to take home at the end of the night.
After graduating with a degree in Engineering from Oregon Stare University, and work experience from Westinghouse and General Electric, Patrick Ormiston founded PFO Lighting Inc in 1996.

Two years later in 1998, Pat ventured into the development of Aquarium Lighting. In his quest to revolutionize lighting, Pat designed and engineered the Solaris Illumination LED Lighting System. This lighting system is the first designed to be used as the main lighting of an aquarium. As such, it presents a new wave of technology.

Pat is also one of our speakers for Reef-A-Palooza, August 18, 2007.

    Come see PFO this Friday!

Aquarium Lighting Technology as well as a 24" Galileo LED light. The Galileo will sell for approximately HALF the price of the Solaris units and are available in 9" 24" 30" and 48". She didn't specify a particular "title" for their presentation, so we can use whatever you think most appropriate. (LED vs MH, etc.)
the donation they will be bringing for the JULY 20 meeting is a single 175-watt MH retro kit including ballast, bulb, mogul socket, reflector, etc.

Come join your friends and fellow hobbyist this
Friday July 20 at the SCMAS meeting.

    3) Auto Topoff Systems (Reservoir vs Solenoid)
    4) Plumbing basics and tricks

Though this is not officially a frag swap, you are more than welcome to
bring corals frags, etc. to sell and/or trade that day.
There are plenty of electrical outlets available and I will have extra
    saltwater handy.

As mentioned earlier, burgers, hotdogs, chips, sodas, etc. will be provided,
so come hungry and ready chow down. (Thank you NicoleC for volunteering the
