Jake Adams is a professional marine aquarist from Colorado. He has a Bachelor's degree in Marine Science and he has worked with spawning corals in Puerto Rico. Jake is the founder of Coralidea.com, and he is the senior editor of the popular reef aquarium blog, reefbuilders.com.
He has consulted on the design and installation of large reef tanks, retail stores and research tanks and when he isn't speaking to reef clubs or writing for marine aquarium publications, Jake also likes to work with freshwater planted aquaria.

Guest Speaker: Ret Talbot

Ret Talbot is an award-winning freelance writer and photographer who frequently reports on the marine aquarium industry. Most often addressing topics at the intersection of the hobby, science and conservation, Talbot is a strong advocate for a robust and sustainable marine aquarium trade where aquarists serve a critical role on the front line of reef conservation. As a marketing consultant and editor, he has worked with many leading marine aquarium companies to promote that vision. When he isn't writing about saltwater aquaria (or tending to one of his five tanks), Ret is often fly fishing in either salt- or freshwater and writing about conservation issues related to angling and healthy fisheries.
Trained as a writer, Ret holds degrees in writing from both Wheaton College (Massachusetts) and the University of St. Andrews (Scotland). He has traveled the world as a mountaineering and fishing guide, as well as a writer seeking out stories in some of the most remote and inaccessible regions on the face of the Earth. His aquarium-related books include The Complete Idiot's Guide to Saltwater Aquariums (September 2009) and Coral (spring 2011), while his aquarium articles can be found in print publications such as CORAL Magazine, Tropical Fish Hobbyist and Aquarium Fish International or online at Suite101.com, where he is the saltwater aquarium feature writer. Ret and his wife Karen, an artist known for her fish paintings, split their time between Laguna Beach, California and Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Topic: The Sustainable Reef of Papua New Guinea
Ret Talbot will talk about Papua New Guinea as a new collection area for a sustainable and robust marine aquarium industry. This includes his recent trip to one of the last near-pristine reef ecosystems in the world and why wild-collection should have a place in the hobby alongside captive breeding. The complete story of how a fish moves from reef to reef tank.

Guest Speaker: Joe Yaiullo

As a kid, Joe Yaiullo spent much of his childhood maintaining home aquariums and exploring the marine life surrounding Long Island, New York. Now he gets paid to basically do what he did as a kid and has been keeping reef tanks for over 20 years.
Joe Yaiullo has a B.S. in Marine Science from LIU Southampton College's marine science program, and worked for 8 years at the NY Aquarium in Brooklyn, New York as Senior Aquarist. In 1992, he began to shape his plan for a world-class aquarium on Long Island's East End and in 2000, after toiling for eight long years, his plans and vision became a reality with the opening of Atlantis Marine World Aquarium in Riverhead, NY.
In 2003, Joe was awarded The Distinguished Alumni Award from Southampton College and is currently president of the Long Island Reef Association, LIRA. (www.longislandreef.org) Joe, an admitted “Coralaholic”, currently feeds his ever increasing addiction with a 20,000 gallon live coral reef display, which is acclaimed as the pinnacle of reef keeping to date. As in true coralaholic fashion, a much larger display is in the planning stages.
Joe has been featured in many reef keeping magazines and books, and has presented lectures throughout the USA including several MACNA’s and in Canada, Germany, Sweden, Finland, England, Monaco, France and The Netherlands. The best recent addition to his reef tank though is a water proof iPod case so Joe can rock out while diving in his tank. Atlantis Marine World has doubled in size since it opened, with many future exhibits in the works. So even though it’s on a larger scale, Curator and Cofounder Joe Yaiullo still considers it all his “DIY” project.

This Month's Topic: Clownfish
Guest Speaker: Morgan Itzel aka Morgman
Morgan Itzel has been keeping marine aquariums for 25 years. His first aquarium was a small ten gallon aquarium that housed a pair of pregnant seahorses, ordered from Boy’s Life Magazine. From that first seahorse tank, Morgan’s passion for learning about marine aquariums & marine fish breeding has continued to grow. Today he maintains over 100 aquariums run on five separate systems.
Morgan currently runs Bluewater Aquaculture a company that specializes in the breeding and rearing of marine fish, mostly clownfish. He has successfully spawned and raised nine species of clownfish and a two varieties of Neon gobies.
Morgan started breeding clownfish in 2000, when his only pair of ocellaris clownfish surprised him and began spawning in his 120 gallon reef tank. In 2003 he increased his marine breeding operation from one breeding pair of clownfish to several dozen. Morgan specializes in raising a few species of clownfish that are in demand by the market.
Morgan continues to work hard at breeding and raising marine fish because he feels that there is nothing more satisfying then to watch a minuscule marine fish grow up before ones eyes. He hopes that his contributions will help protect the oceans just a little bit more.
SCMAS meetings are open to all non-members as well! We would love to have you there.
Hope to see you all there.

This Month's Topic: A Reefer's Buying Guide Part 2
This Month's Topic: A Reefer's Buying Guide (part 2) This topic may be postponed as we may have a guest speaker discussing the collection side of the industry.
Ever wondered why products in this hobby are so expensive while others are so cheap? Ever wondered what makes a particular coral worth so much more than another. Ever wondered what pump would be best for my application? What lighting system is best for me? This is one of those meetings that will provide you the info that will definitely save you money.
Last month we didn't get through nearly all the topics we planned and we had some great reef saving tips.
We will also have our ever famous raffle which will contain: Live goods from Amazing Aquariums & Reefs and/or Sea Dwelling Creatures. Dry goods coming from companies such as Hydor, Warner Marine, Rod's Food, and many others. (I'll give more details about the Hydor as soon as I open the box)

Topic: Invertabrates
Who is Sara Mavinkurve?

As a proud crew member of WWM, reef keeping has always been more than a "hobby" to me. It's truly been a love like none other. It has driven me to learn as much as I possibly can about these reticent animals in their perilous worlds. The courses I took in biology and chemistry, biochemistry, etc. along with my past experiences in biological research is what has enabled me to be able to read and understand biological research and study design. It's been my ongoing hope to use this ability to make more academic information accessible to the reef keeping hobby. I've created ASIRA.org primarily to provide free, printable care guides for corals (along with other information) to local aquarium stores.
