Filtration Methods for the Reef Aquarium

By Adam Blundell

Adam Blundell (M.S.) will speak at the September 15th meeting of the Southern California Marine Aquarist Society (SCMAS).

Adam's presentation will cover some of the terms used in the hobby today and how they describe filtration methods.  Both the terminology and methods of filtration will be presented.  This lecture will introduce new concepts and show that there are many options when it comes to filtration choice.  Come with your questions and any innovative thoughts you have on aquarium filtration to ‘run them by’ an experienced professional.

Our speaker has extensive hobby experience and knowledge.  Adam has studied aquariums for a number of years.  Recently he has been exploring the history of reef aquarium filtration.  These studies lead to a series of articles.  These articles were published and now serve as a basis for bringing hobbyists together on common grounds.  Adam is now known as the expert in filtration methods and continues to explore new concepts in this field.

A small sampling of Adam's credentials include: President of the Aquatic & Terrestrial Research Team, and past President of the massive aquarium club Wasatch Marine Aquarium Society (http://www.utahreefs.com).  Extensive travel for dive trips and conference presentations keeps him on the road for much of his time.  He’s written dozens of articles for scientific journals and trade magazines. In between all this activity, Adam teaches research methods and design to fellow scientists.

Adam began his saltwater adventures while a student in junior high school.  In order to educate himself about his new hobby, each day Adam wrote the Latin name of a different fish on a small piece of paper.  Then, during the day, between classes, he would pull out that paper and memorize the name.  Yes, he was that nerdy!  Following that passion he pursued a career in marine biology.  He earned a bachelor’s degree in the marine ecology field, and followed that with a master’s degree in the natural resource areas.  Adam's education and employment kept him quite busy.  He spent hours and hours working in labs, and frequently traveled to far off lands.  Adam has had the opportunity to explore many reefs and to study their ecology.  It didn’t take long for him to fall in love with a girl from the sea.  Known to a few as a "pirate," but known to many as a lover of the sea, her name is Marzena.  Together they have a happy house and a cute little dog.  When not out traveling around, Adam and Marzena like to sit with their dog Boomer and watch their aquarium.  Marzena will be accompany Adam to the SCMAS meeting.

Please join us at the SCMAS meeting on September 15th to enjoy an evening of good food, raffle, discussion and an opportunity to learn something new about filtration methods from our esteemed guest speaker, Adam Blundell.  Make your plans now.
